I am working on the genealogy of the following families who came from Ireland and settled in Waupun about 1853-6. Most of them were probably drawn by the opportunity to work on the building of the state prison, but some also worked on the railroad. Some of them later moved on to Goodhue Co., MN, while others remained. I will be happy to correspond with anyone interested in these families. BENTON, CAREY, CROWE, DONOVAN, FARRELL, FRANKLIN, MAHER, O'REILLY, ROWELLS /ROWLES, RYAN, SHANAHAN. Also related families of other ethnicities: GRAY, GLENDENNING, THEISEN & WILKES.

While Nellie Pater Nummerdor and Nick De Graff did not have any children of their own, I do have it in my database, that they were married July 29, 1915. I have been in contact with a De Graff relative who left me a message in my guestbook. I will let her know that this site exists and to try to contact Gert.

What I found out (with a lot of help from others!) about the Dykgraaf/DeGraff family. Nicolaas Dijkgraaf, born Melissant (The Netherlnds) 7 December 1867. He leaves The Netherlands in October 1895 for Paterson, New Jersey. There he marries around 1900 Minnie Wilderman, daughter of John Wilderman and Johanna Hendriks. His forst born child was Peter, born Paterson 17 July 1900. Then the family went on a visit to Minnie's brother in Wisconsin. The family stayed in Wisconsin. The second child of Nicolaas (Nick/Nicholas) was born 10 January 1902 in Trenton, Dodge County, WI. This son, Johannes (John) died 2 Mat 1912 in Waupun. The third child, Anthony was 7 September 1903 (I do not know where!). The next children was a twin: Hattie and Minnie, born 7 May 1908 in Chester Township, Dodge County, Wi. Lena, child #6 was born in Waupun 17 August 1909. In Waupun was born child #7; Nicholas on 3 ??? 1910. The last child was Henry (Hank), born Waupun 11 September 1911. Most of the children I found; Lena must have died young. There is probably also a daughter: Johanna, born around 1905; I'm not sure. Nicholas used the surname Dykgraaf and DeGraff. As his first wife dies on 25 April 1915, the obituary in the Waupun Leader says Dykgraaf. Know is, that his children have had the surname DeGraff. Nicholas died in Alto on 7 Januaru 1957. His second wife, with whom he marries 19 September 1915 in Waupun was Nellie Pater, widow of Walter Nummerdor. Information about the children of Nicholas Dykgraaf/DeGraff and Minnie Wilderman: Peter died in Waupun 20 May 1990. He was married to Johanna Frens, probably the Johanna DeGraff, who died in Waupun April 1985. Children of this couple not known to me. Anthony died probably in August 1983 in Fond du Lac. He was married to Jennie Nummerdor, daughter of Walter Nummerdor and Nellie Pater. Children of this couple I do not know. Hattie died probably November 1976 in Ripon, WI and was married to Benjamin McCabe. Not all children known to me. Minnie is still alive and must have been married with a Mr. Cumbier. A son Toby was mentioned to me. Henry (Hank) died in Hayward, Alameda County, CA in August 1978. Not known to whom he married. There must be a son David and a daughter. Who can help me to find decendants of those mentioned above. Thanks in advance. Gert Scholten, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. E-mail: gjscholten@chello.nl

Hello. This is a little strange, but here goes. Hope it rings a bell...My great great grandfather, John Rucinski, was convicted of murdering my great grandmother, Paulina Timinski-Rucinski. He was sentenced to life at Waupun but then went to an insane asylum in Oshkosh. A year later, he was sent to Central State. I believe he may be buried in Waupun, however. Does the prison have a cemetary? Is there a Catholic Church that may have taken Catholic prisoners, then? Thanks for any reply. Carrie in Texas mrs_howser@hotmail.com

I am interested in any information regarding the descedants of Thomas J. Oliver(abt. 1812 - 1868), my great, great, great grandfather. I am particularly interested in discovering any information concerning his 2nd marriage to J?. She bore 2 sons. The first was his namesake, Thomas John Oliver, the second was Edward Roy Oliver. I believe that J? is the sister of Margaret Bryce, wife of John Bryce(his business partner in a local hardware store).

Thomas Sr. had many other children from his first marriage to Nancy?. They are all buried at Forest Mound Cemetary.... but I haven't been able to locate J? and they disapeared off all local census records after the death of Thomas Sr.

Other surnames connected through marriage are: Hall, Sampey, Ulmer, Wood, Paff, Stafford, Dart, Germain, Harney, Hennesey, Ledell, Wood, Sloan

Thank You!! kim.eastep@rcn.com

Hi, I'm CJ. Looking for any information on ELIZABETH HODGE nee CHAPMAN (previous marriages to Unknown Carman and Unknown Finch), wife of Alfred Hodge. Information at hand lists her death in Waupun in the fall of 1863. She had a surviving daughter, Martha, who married a Timothy Probart and later moved to MN. There may have been other Hodge children (4 of hers and several older ones of his from a previous marriage), and possibly a Finch child who all died young. Any information would be helpful. Hi, I am not sure you can help but any clues you have would be most appreciated. I am looking for 2 inmates of Waupun Prison. My problem: Dates are sketchy. Fred May or Mays and Larry Sargent went to prison :: far reach guess..I am sure of it being after 1942 within 10years or so. Fred was married in the chapel at the prison to perhap's a Helen. I know this has so few facts. The men were sentenced to natural life but did get out after approx 16-17 years. They were living in MI at the time they left for prison. I cannot come up with anything else that might help. Thanks Brenda kingsleyATaol.com

To those visiting this site:

Unfortunately we don't have much information here on prisoners and we have no prison records.

In September 2005 I wrote to the Wisconsin Department of Corrections regarding the records of incarcerated or previously incarcerated individuals. I received a response back in November 2005. I will quote from the letter received:

"We do have records located here in Madison, WI, these are for offenders who have been released from a correctional center or institution. We also have records at each institution, which are records for currently incarcerated persons. The proper procedure to request copies is the individual needs to send a written request asking for specific information. They will also need to read, fill out, and sign an 1163 form, which is the Authorization to Disclose Non-Health information or 1163A form, which is the authorization for Use and Disclosure of Protected Health Information."

Later on in the letter, it mentions that the Madison office is only required to keep 5 years of records. However, it is not clear if it is all records or just certain ones. It also mentions that a random 10% of the records are given to the Wisconsin Historical Society, so if the Wisconsin Department of Corrections can't help, you could contact the Wisconsin Historical Society.

The forms mentioned above can be found by doing a google search for them.

If you have other questions, please contact the library using the email address at the bottom of this page.

I'm tracing the emigrated branches of the family in the USA, esp. Waupun. The oldest ancestors Van de Streek firstly lived on the “bovenstreek” in the municipality of Oldebroek, The Netherlands. After 1735 Egbert Gerrits lives in Oosterwolde. He there married and lived in the hamlet "de streek". There our surname comes from: Van (= from) de Streek! All Vande(r)Streeks I found so far are to be traced as descendants of emigrated family-members in de book “Oud Veluws Geslacht Van de Streek” All “vande(r)Streek’s” in the USA are descended from ancestors, mentioned in the “Van de Streek-genealogy I examine. Hope you can and will help me tracing the family-members from the point their families emigrated.

I just discovered that my g-g-grandfather is listed as a prisoner in the 1910 census at the Wisconsin State prison in Wanpun. We had no idea that he had been in jail although no one would ever talk about him and that might be why. His name was Joseph Geischer and he was 54 from Germany. Is there any way to discover what crime he committed to be put there? Norma Karter nckarter@flash.net

I am trying to find out when Peter Weidner arrived in Waupun. He shows up in the 1860 census and on the land map of Waupun in 1874. I think he may have worked on the Waupun Prison, but am uncertain. He is buried in the cemetery in Waupun. Are there records for Waupun Prison construction workers? Where could I get church records of marriages. He was probably married around 1854. He married Katherine Kappel. She is also buried in the cemetery. Karen.Weidner@va.gov

I am looking for the baptismal records for Cecelia Archer and William Archer. They were most likely baptised between 1856-1858 in a Catholic Church near the Waupan prison. Their father (Richard Archer) worked as a carpenter constructing the prison. The Archer family moved to Milwaukee about 1860 where subsequent children were baptised.

According to my info, he died about 1858. They immigrated to Wisconsin from Germany in 1852. William Christian Reinhard II also lived there for some time while building the prison. He was one of the architects on the project. Thank you very much.

I have the following information on the Thomas Sampey family: Thomas Sampey (Ch 13 October 1815 Hawton, England - 31 March 1862 Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri) married 20 June 1848 at Hawton to Elizabeth Jenner (1825 - 10 January 1897 at Waupun, Wisconsin) 2nd Generation Grace Sampey (30 June 1849 Hull, England - ) married 4 July 1866 to Robert L. Oliver 4 May 1834 Scotland - ) an attorney. Elizabeth Jenner Sampey (died 1851 Lincoln, England) William Sampey (6 February 1853 Waupun - ) Ada G. Sampey (10 February 1854 Waupun - ) married 2 January 1875 to George B. Durand, a physician, son of William Henry and Elizabeth Butt Durand. 3rd Generation Ada Oliver (February 1867 - ) an artist Gertrude G. 'Gertie' Oliver (1873 - supposed to have died at age 34) Grace Oliver (June 1878 - ), a dressmaker married John L. Hartgerink From various papers in Wisconsin I found that Mr. Sampey was a prosperous farmer but in 1861 while he was in the army, his property was sold at a Sheriff's sale. After his death, in 1862 another property listed as being owned by Thomas Sampey, his wife and John Oswin was to be sold at a different Sheriff's sale. John Oswin was married to Thomas Sampey's sister and was also deceased by this time. We have no evidence that John Oswin ever went to America but would welcome confirmation of this. I'd be interested to talk with other family members.

More information on the Sampey family: I hadn't traced William the son of Thomas Sampey and Elizabeth Jenner of Wisconsin until now. William was born 6 February 1853 in Waupum, Wisconsin and died 29 December 1903 in Traill County, North Dakota (yes Traill has 2 'ls'). He ran the Mayville Hotel, Mayville, North Dakota and drove some kind of a service between two towns (buss driver on 1900 census under Sampy). He married Hattie E. ______ (10 June 1859 -22 February 1920). After William's death, she remarried Arthur C. Rapp who also left her a widow by the 1920 census. William and Hattie had two children, Hazel (about 1890) who married Peter Adams, and Gladys (about 1895). Hope this helps.

Hello! I am seeking anything about my great great grandfather, Job Allen Canfield and his wife, Mary Allen Mosher Canfield who came to Waupun, Dodge Co., WI. sometime after 1845. Mary gave birth to a son, Henry Obediah Canfield in 1848 while in Waupon, Dodge Co., WI. (So they had to have come to WI between 1845 and 1848.) Anything that you can find would be greatfully appreciated. Job was a judge when they migrated to MN after WI. He might have been a judge in WI as well. This is a conjecture. Thanking you very kindly for your time. Best wishes, Susan L. Van Horn Vhirs@aol.com Carlsbad, Ca.

I am trying to locate Jacqueline Johnson, she was born in prison in Waupun Prison around 1930. I found a Margaret Johnson, but was not able to find anything on prison births. Could you steer me in the right direction? I understand she was adopted by a family and there was another daughter born later to the same woman, Karen is her name, and later a half brother. Family members do not talk about this. Linda
